Motivation
What is my motivation for wanted to share this beautiful language? I am a mother to 2 wonderful school age kids and an adult son. My two younger children are growing up very different from me and my oldest. They have have not had an opportunity to adopt Spanish as a language as they are primarily around English speaking kids and families.
My Story
Yes, my motivation for offering Spanish classes are my children. However, I mentioned that I love the Spanish language. I want to invite you into my experience that resulted in knowing a second language.
Being born in Southern California to Mexican parents, I had an opportunity to hear and speak Spanish on a daily basis. This brought some wonderful experiences for me as child. I have always felt that language brings people together. There is something special about instantly connecting with others that also speak Spanish. I experienced this throughout my lifetime. I learned at a young age that for those who only speak Spanish in a primarily English speaking country creates challenges. Knowing Spanish gave me opportunities to assist others by translating. Now as an adult, I have found that I have developed a side of me that looks to help others. Throughout my life I've assisted others and built connections as a result.
To me, speaking Spanish is not only a means to opening doors from a career standpoint. It also creates experiences that we would not have experienced otherwise.
So why have I not taught my school age kids Spanish? I have tried but it's difficult when it's not done in a structured way. What do I mean by that? I learned Spanish through emersion. I began to learn it from my parents and those around me. Unfortunately for my kids, they have not had that opportunity. Being the only Spanish speaker creates it's own challenges. As my kids are getting older, I'm finding that I am becoming even more passionate about my kids learning Spanish. I am committed to establishing a structured, fun and consistent approach to teaching them Spanish.
As I prepared, I thought I would like to share this with others as well.
Thank you,
Marisol
